Queensland Smoke Alarm Laws Are Changing in 2027 – Is Your Home Ready?

May 19, 2026

Many Queensland homeowners still don’t realise that major smoke alarm law changes become fully enforceable from 1 January 2027.

While rental properties and homes being sold have already needed to comply for several years, the final stage of Queensland’s smoke alarm legislation will soon apply to all owner-occupied homes as well.

That means a large number of homes across North Brisbane and Moreton Bay may still require smoke alarm upgrades before the deadline arrives.

What Will Be Required By 2027?

Under Queensland legislation, homes will require:

  • Photoelectric smoke alarms
  • Interconnected alarms
  • Smoke alarms in every bedroom
  • Smoke alarms in hallways connecting bedrooms
  • Smoke alarms on every storey of the home
  • Alarms compliant with Australian Standard AS3786-2014

When one interconnected alarm activates, all alarms throughout the home sound simultaneously.

Older Smoke Alarms May No Longer Be Compliant

Many homes still contain older smoke alarms that:

  • Are more than 10 years old
  • Are not interconnected
  • Use outdated ionisation technology
  • Only cover hallways
  • Fail randomly or chirp constantly

Queensland Fire Department guidance states that alarms older than 10 years should be replaced.

A common issue many homeowners discover is that they simply do not have enough alarms installed to meet the new requirements.

Why Queensland Changed The Laws

Queensland introduced the reforms following the 2011 Slacks Creek house fire tragedy, which claimed 11 lives.

The goal of the updated legislation is to improve early fire detection and give families more time to escape safely during house fires.

Queensland now has some of the strictest residential smoke alarm laws in Australia.

Common Smoke Alarm Problems Homeowners Experience

Across Queensland, homeowners regularly report issues such as:

  • Random smoke alarm activation
  • Interconnected alarms all triggering at once
  • False alarms near kitchens
  • Chirping alarms that won’t stop
  • Difficulty identifying which alarm caused the issue
  • Confusion about legal requirements

These problems are commonly discussed online, particularly as older systems begin failing or homeowners attempt DIY upgrades.

Hardwired vs 10-Year Battery Alarms

The legislation allows either:

  • Hardwired 240V smoke alarms installed by a licensed electrician
  • Or compliant 10-year non-removable battery alarms

However, if your home already has hardwired smoke alarms installed, replacements generally need to remain hardwired.

Don’t Leave It Until Late 2026

As the deadline approaches, demand for smoke alarm upgrades across Queensland is expected to increase significantly.

Many electrical companies are already encouraging homeowners to upgrade early to avoid:

  • Installation delays
  • Product shortages
  • Increased pricing
  • Last-minute compliance issues during property sales or leasing
