Air Conditioner or Ceiling Fan Problems? Fix Them Before Brisbane Summer

September 18, 2026

The warmer weather is starting to return to Brisbane and Moreton Bay.

We are not in summer yet, but this is often the time of year when homeowners switch the ceiling fans back on, run the air conditioner for the first time in months and suddenly remember all the little problems they ignored at the end of last summer.

The bedroom fan is noisy.

The lounge room fan turns, but barely seems to move any air.

The air conditioner is running, but the room still feels warm.

Or maybe there is a bedroom, home office or living area where you spent all of last summer thinking, we really need a fan or air conditioner in here.

Spring is a good time to find those problems and get them sorted before Brisbane’s genuinely hot weather arrives.

Is Your Air Conditioner Actually Cooling Properly?

Turning an air conditioner on is one thing. Actually cooling the room properly is another.

If you have not used your air conditioner much through winter, run it now and pay attention to how it performs.

Does the room start cooling normally? Does the unit stay running? Is it making unusual noises? Does anything trip when it starts?

If the system turns on but does not seem to be cooling effectively, there could be several possible causes. Some will require an air-conditioning technician, while electrical problems may require a licensed electrician.

What you do not want is to discover the problem on the first extremely hot day when everyone else has discovered theirs as well.

Does the Air Conditioner Trip the Power?

If switching on your air conditioner causes a circuit breaker or safety switch to trip, do not keep resetting it and hoping the problem disappears.

Protection devices operate for a reason.

The problem may involve the air conditioner itself, the electrical circuit supplying it, a connection or another electrical fault that needs to be tested.

This can become particularly noticeable as the weather heats up and households begin using air conditioners, ceiling fans and other appliances simultaneously.

Power Bolt can investigate electrical faults and determine whether the problem is with the circuit, electrical supply or another part of the installation.

Is Your Ceiling Fan Spinning But Not Doing Much?

This is one of the easiest problems to ignore during winter.

The fan still turns, so technically it works.

Then a warm night arrives, you turn it up to maximum speed and realise it hardly moves enough air to make a difference.

Older ceiling fans can gradually become less effective. Motors can wear, components can deteriorate and older fan designs may simply not provide the airflow you want from a modern ceiling fan.

If you spent last summer running your ceiling fan at full speed while also using a pedestal fan beside the bed, now might be the time to replace it.

What About a Noisy or Wobbling Ceiling Fan?

A little fan noise can become very annoying at 11 pm when you are trying to sleep underneath it.

Clicking, rattling, humming, vibration or excessive wobbling are all worth investigating before the fan goes back into regular use.

Some problems can be caused by relatively minor issues. In other cases, particularly with an older fan, replacement may be the more practical option.

You should also have a fan checked if you notice unusual electrical behaviour, intermittent operation or changes in how the fan responds to its controls.

Do You Need a New Ceiling Fan?

Sometimes the problem is not that something has broken.

You simply need more airflow.

Maybe a bedroom has never had a ceiling fan. Perhaps the home office becomes uncomfortable during the afternoon. Or you have an outdoor entertaining area that would be much more usable with proper air movement.

Spring is a good time to install new fans because you can have everything ready before they are running for hours every day.

Choosing the right fan also matters.

Fan diameter, blade design, motor type, ceiling height and the size of the room all affect how well a ceiling fan performs.

We recently looked at the differences between AC and DC ceiling fan motors, and there can be significant differences in efficiency, noise, speed control and performance depending on the fan you choose.

Is There a Room That Really Needs Air Conditioning?

Most homeowners already know which room we are talking about.

It is the bedroom that becomes unbearable in January.

The west-facing home office that heats up every afternoon.

The living area where one air conditioner is trying to cool far more space than it was designed for.

You probably noticed the problem last summer and then forgot about it once autumn arrived.

Before another summer arrives, it may be worth looking at installing an additional split-system air conditioner.

The electrical side of a new air-conditioning installation is important as well. Depending on the system and the existing electrical installation, a dedicated circuit or other electrical work may be required.

Should You Use Ceiling Fans With Air Conditioning?

It does not necessarily have to be one or the other.

Ceiling fans and air conditioning can work very well together.

An air conditioner changes the temperature of the air, while a ceiling fan helps circulate air through the occupied part of the room.

That airflow can make the room feel more comfortable and can help distribute cooled air more effectively.

For many Brisbane homes, having good ceiling fans throughout the main living spaces and bedrooms gives you more flexibility over how you cool the house as conditions change.

Give Everything a Test Run This Spring

You do not need to wait until summer to find out whether your cooling setup is ready.

On the next warm day, give everything a proper test.

  • Run each ceiling fan through all of its speed settings.
  • Listen for clicking, humming or rattling.
  • Look for excessive movement or wobbling.
  • Check whether the fan is actually producing enough airflow.
  • Turn your air conditioner on and see how quickly the room begins cooling.
  • Watch for tripping circuit breakers or safety switches.
  • Think about the rooms that were uncomfortable last summer.

If something is not working properly now, it is unlikely to become more convenient to fix once summer arrives.
